Punjab University Academic Staff Association (ASA) has expressed strong reservations over a news item published in a local daily regarding the new universities’ Act in which universities’ Statutory body Senate has been abolished and powers of the Syndicate have been curtailed reportedly. The ASA leaders said that intervention in the affairs of universities would destroy system of higher education in the country. In this regard, Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association Dr Ehsan Sharif while terming the Act as ‘desperate act’ said that some elements did not like education-friendly policies of the government and wanted to introduce such measures which would bring a bad name to the government. He said that already laid-down policy must be adopted in all the universities of Pakistan and teachers would not accept abolishment of the Senate or curtailment of the powers of any other statutory body.
